Roxane Gay: Writer, Activist, Woman

For our group project, we decided to profile Roxane Gay. We were intrigued by the excerpts that we read in class, as her writing talent is captivating. She has written multiple books, including Hunger and Bad Feminist, and also has contributed to various publications, including The New York Times. Gay is known for her speaking as well. In a short ten minutes we could not touch on every element of Roxane Gay, but we wanted to touch on what connected to what was covered in class.

In terms of identity, Roxane is a fat, black, queer feminist woman, and she is unapologetic about all of this. She has faced trauma, fatphobia, and countless trolls on Twitter, and has come out the other side. She is not perfect, but that makes her a more accessible icon. She is human. In whatever she does, Gay projects honesty, presenting her experiences and trying to impart what she has learned on others.

  1. I really enjoyed y'all's presentation. I've vaguely known about Roxane Gay for a while because a lot of people I follow on Twitter retweet her a lot, but never looked into her before, so it was super interesting to hear about her life. While what I've been through feels incomparable to the trauma she endured when she was young, her desire to eat in order to "protect" herself deeply resonated with me, because I pretty much did the same exact thing. I'm definitely going to check out her books at some point.
