Final Project Naturals

      Naturals

For my final project, I created a magazine for African American and Afro-Latino women who have natural hair. Natural hair is a huge movement right now in the African and Latino communities. More and more women are deciding to wear their hair natural instead of relaxing their hair to make it permanently straight. They are ignoring the white standards of beauty and making their natural beauty an equal counterpart to the standards of white beauty. The title of the magazine is called Naturals. I chose this title because its a term women use in the African American communities to describe their hair without a relaxer and perm. At first, I wanted to make a website with the same goals in mind. However, a magazine was the best choice for this project. Just because society puts women on the covers of magazines on a pedal stool and they are marked as the definition of beauty. For my magazine, I want African American and Afro latino women on the cover of my magazine with their curly and kinky hair. I want that to be seen as beautiful.

            What's in the magazine?

For the first issue of Naturals magazine, there will be poems from Corrin Carter. Who is a successful poet. She talks about accepting our own beauty and body image. In her latest poem " I am Beautiful". She also wrote a poem about hair shrinkage. called " I'm not bald-headed, its just called shrinkage". The magazine will also have the latest hairstyles for natural women. For example like cornrows, two strand twist, twist out and dreads. The title of that page is called natural hairstyles of the months. Every month the magazine will have the latest new hairstyle for African and Afro-Latino American women. The magazine will have interviews with different women regarding their hair journeys. It will also have a review of different hair products every month.

            What are the goals?

The goals for this magazine is to show kinky and curly hair is beautiful. I want African American women to feel beautiful with their kinky hair, as do white women with straight hair. I want this magazine to educate African American and Afro-Latino women about their natural hair. So they can pass down information on what they learned from this magazine to future generations of black and brown girls. I want young black and brown girls to see themselves in this magazine with kinky hair. I don't want them to feel pressure to straighten their hair to feel beautiful.
